When looking at a projector's spec sheet, you will inevitably see the term "〇〇 Lumens." However, this is where many beginners fall into a huge trap.

"It says 3000 lumens, so it should be perfectly fine for my bright living room!" Many people buy based on this thought, only to find that when they actually turn it on, the image is "completely washed out and invisible."

Why You Should Not Be Fooled by "Brightness" Labels

The conclusion is simple: the word "lumen" has two (or more) different meanings.

1. ANSI Lumens (International Standard)

This is the globally trusted metric. It calculates brightness by dividing the screen into 9 sections and averaging the brightness of each point. Since it's closest to the actual "perceived brightness," always look for this notation.

2. Lumens / LED Lumens (Proprietary Standards)

These are often used in ultra-budget models. They typically refer to the maximum brightness of the light source itself, which tends to be significantly higher than the brightness that actually reaches the screen (essentially "spec inflation").

[Warning!] Even if a budget machine claims "10,000 Lumens!", if there is no ANSI lumen notation, it's highly likely that the actual brightness is only a few hundred lumens.


Lumen Benchmarks by Environment

"So, how much brightness do I actually need for my room?" Here are the guidelines:

① Complete Darkroom (with blackout curtains)

  • Benchmark: 500 — 1,000 ANSI Lumens
  • If you can make the room pitch black, this is sufficient. In fact, too much brightness can cause eye strain, so most budget models fall into this range.

② Dimly Lit Room (with indirect lighting / thin curtains)

  • Benchmark: 1,500 — 2,500 ANSI Lumens
  • If you want to watch with some light in the room, you need this level of brightness to maintain contrast and a comfortable viewing experience.

③ Bright Living Room (daytime natural light)

  • Benchmark: 3,000+ ANSI Lumens
  • If you want to watch during the day with curtains open, you need an extremely high-brightness model. However, these tend to be more expensive and larger in size.

Other Factors That Affect "Visibility"

If you only chase lumen counts, the image can become unnaturally washed out. Check these two points as well:

  • Contrast Ratio: How deeply it can express "black." The higher this is, the more detail you see in dark scenes, and the image feels more three-dimensional.
  • Screen Material: Using a dedicated screen (especially high-gain screens) instead of a white wall can effectively boost the perceived brightness.
